Milan

Milan
   Chief city in northern Italy (q.v.), especially in the fourth century when the imperial court resided there. Fourth-century Milan is also known for the so-called Edict of Milan, and for Ambrose (qq.v.), whose tenure as bishop made Milan the spiritual center of the West. Milan declined in importance after 402 when the western emperor Honorios (q.v.) moved the court to Ravenna, in response to Alaric's (qq.v.) invasion of Italy in 401-402. The Huns (q.v.) pillaged Milan in 452, and in 539 during Justinian I's (q.v.) war in Italy it was seriously damaged by the Ostrogoths (q.v.). The Lombards (q.v.) captured it in 569.
